Harry Potter But Gloomier (and deadlier) - A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

There are so many things I like about this book and I'm probably not the only one who compared it to Harry Potter. Set in The Scholomance, an underground, dystopian school were magicians are placed in for 4 years. There we follow the story of El, a loner who is in her third year.

Here's the backcover of the book:
A Deadly Education is set at Scholomance, a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death (for real) — until one girl, El, begins to unlock its many secrets.

There are no teachers, no holidays, and no friendships, save strategic ones. Survival is more important than any letter grade, for the school won’t allow its students to leave until they graduate… or die! The rules are deceptively simple: Don’t walk the halls alone. And beware of the monsters who lurk everywhere.

El is uniquely prepared for the school’s dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out millions. It would be easy enough for El to defeat the monsters that prowl the school. The problem? Her powerful dark magic might also kill all the other students.

The books greatest success is the truly horrid and nightmarish setting it is in. While we tend to think of magic schools as some dreamy wonderful place to go. And that's true in A Deadly Education, The Scholomance is probably the safest place a young magician can be, but still about a quarter of the class will die. In this world magicians are constantly pursed by "mals" who are attempting to eat them. This leads to a school were one wrong step from a student a they can be eaten.

Lastly, the main character, El, is someone that despite her sometimes grumpy and always stubborn attitude, you still find yourself rooting for her.

Thanks you all so much!

Yours In Reading,
